I dated my former fiancé for 6 years long distance (across the Atlantic) before we got engaged last year. However, as the wedding date approached, I found myself regarding it more as a banishment abroad, rather than as a romantic start to a new life with someone I loved. I dreaded moving to a city I found devoid of culture, career options, and convivial social life. It was too much to bear the thought of living so far away from my family and friends for a long time - perhaps forever - despite my love for him. It spurred me to calling off the wedding about 4 months after our engagement.

I am confident in my decision that location, family, and career are more important to me than I once believed, but it has been hard to move on from a loving relationship that spanned most of my 20s at the cost of location.
