Selling Tips
Communication
It is a top reason why relationships fail. Let's try to change that! Describe your item clearly, accurately, and easily. Be sure to include the brand, size, condition, measurements, model, packaging, and any other important product features. If there are appraisals or certifications be sure to mention that you can verify the authenticity of your item. Be honest about any flaws in your item. Communicate the shipping, handling, payment, and return policies for your item. Participate in the discussion of your product and story to give the potential buyer a sense of who you are. Answer private message questions from potential buyers in a timely fashion. Clear communication leaves little room for dispute.
Storytelling
Storytelling will not only be cathartic for you, but it will also build trust between potential buyers and yourself. Don't slack here. Make sure that your story is authentic. You choose the genre (Comedy? Drama? Mystery? Romance?), fiction not allowed! Also keep in mind; we want all the details, but not the last names or personal information of your ex-lovers. We must keep this space safe for everyone. If you want your item to be seen, make sure your story is worth sharing!
Pricing
Price your item to sell. Someone enjoying your once-loved gift while you enjoy a little cash is better than having your item sit unloved and unused in a box somewhere. If your item is flawed or used, be even more generous with your pricing. Shoppers love deals. If you are not giving them a deal, your item is not likely to sell.
Photography
Etsy sellers have picture taking down, eBay users do not. Here are some simple guidelines for good pictures.
- Make sure your background is uncluttered and a soft, neutral color. Patterns and harsh color backgrounds are generally a bad idea. Photographing clothing and jewelry on a body is also usually a bad idea. People need to be able to imagine whatever you are selling on their body or in their house (not on your body or in your house). Make it easy for them.
- Make sure you have good lighting.
- Take the picture from several angles so the potential buyer can get a good idea of what they are getting. You can load up to five pictures of one item on The Ex Outlet.
- Be honest. Be sure to take pictures of flaws if there are any so the buyer is aware before they make the purchase.
Payment
There are several easy ways to get paid! When you upload your item, we provide a space for you to give information on how you would like to receive your payment. Once the buyer has committed to buying your item, we will put them directly in touch with you to arrange for payment. Here are our recommendations for receiving payments.
Escrow
We strongly recommend using escrow.com to our buyers and sellers for all high value items, typically anything valued over $500. This protects both the buyer and the seller. We strongly discourage buyers from buying anything from a seller who refuses to use escrow.com. We ONLY recommend using escrow.com. Please be aware there are fraudulent escrow services. One more time... use escrow.com for selling all diamond rings and other expensive items!
PayPal
Sign up for a PayPal account to be able to accept online payments. It's really easy and provides some protection.
Checks & Money orders
Yes, these still exist! You can send checks and money orders via snail mail. Never ask for money to be wired to you, we advise our buyers against wiring money to strangers.
**We highly discourage meeting someone you've met on this site in person for a payment. While the world if full of wonderful people, there are a few bad apples. It is better to be safe than sorry.
